Where was Jesus between his death and the resurrection?

When Christ was Crusified he said to the theif on the cross, "today shalt thou be with me in paradise". However on the third day when he was resurrected he said to Mary, "Touch me not for I have not yet ascended unto the Father.."

Where was Jesus between his death and the resurrection?
His soul had descended into Hades, a place described in Luke 16:19-31.......

"For David says of Him,

'I SAW THE LORD ALWAYS IN MY PRESENCE;

FOR HE IS AT MY RIGHT HAND, SO THAT I WILL NOT BE SHAKEN.

'THEREFORE MY HEART WAS GLAD AND MY TONGUE EXULTED;

MOREOVER MY FLESH ALSO WILL LIVE IN HOPE;

BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT ABANDON MY SOUL TO HADES,

NOR ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY.

'YOU HAVE MADE KNOWN TO ME THE WAYS OF LIFE;

YOU WILL MAKE ME FULL OF GLADNESS WITH YOUR PRESENCE.'

Peter preaching, Acts 2:25-28

If you read the Scripture noted in Luke, you will see Hades was both a place of torment and comfort, the place of comfort being referred to as "Abraham's bosom", which I believe is equivalent to Paradise as stated by Jesus to the thief on the cross.
Reply:out back having coffee and a smoke
Reply:You have a lot of good answers here. I might just add, on the cross when Jesus was talking to the thief, it can be translated "I tell you today, you will be with me in Paradise." Not that "you will be with me today in Paradise," That would be rather contradictory, because his spirit/soul didn't raise for three days.

Yes, there are a lot of "translations. But, if you will go to a Strongs concordence, which takes its translation from the original manuscripts, you can get a lot of information on your questions.
Reply:Some say He was just in the grave (tomb) Some say just His spirit went to be with God the Father. Some say both body and spirit went to be with god the Father for a few days in Heaven. Bottom line-His body and spirit arose from the dead on the first Easter morning, stayed in earth for about 40 days then body and spirit arise back into Heaven in front of witnesses.
Reply:He was ministering to the Saints that were dwelling in Abraham's Bosom..a place that was also know as Paradise.

He went there to set the "captives" free, the captives being all those that had "died" prior to Jesus' Crucifixion. Since the payment for sin had not yet been paid, those people were required to await the Savior until His death. Once the blood atonement of Christ was fulfilled..then they were allowed into Heaven. Those that did not want to obey God...they are in Sheol, awaiting the Day of Judgement!

We who are alive...still have that choice to make...Heaven? of Hell?...It is our God-given free will choice to make up our own minds?

Choose you this day..whom YOU will serve.
Reply:He was preaching to those that havent yet heard the gospel or had a chance to accept it.

If you touch a non resurrected dead person then wouldnt your hand just go right thru them?
Reply:I'm curious to all you other answerers. Where does it say Jesus was in hell for three days?
Reply:Although its sort of similar to Hell, Jesus actually descended to Sheol, a.k.a. Hades, which is the underworld inhabited by the dead, but without all the torture.
Reply:Jesus and His likes can not be comprehended by the scales of Time. Time is a finite thing and what was yesterday is not what we have today.

These divine personalities (in India they are referred to as 'Mahapurush') live and perform beyond the realm of times as we understand it.

Yet it is difficult to explain and give answer to your question.
Reply:He was using thou holy bathroometh
Reply:Did you catch that to? I would have to say there is a little humanity in everything isn;t there? Whoops! I did learn somthing when I was salted with fire. And that is there are differnt dungeons and places were the dead go. Hell, Hades, lake of fire, the sea. et... Im sure he had a few surmons in the grave.Maybe there was a first resurection A ?
Reply:I too have wondered about that. But then you have to remember that Jesus is God. Saying that to the thief was comforting, and Jesus IS the great comforter.

As for what he said to Mary, well, he was in His earthly body at that time, which was not yet glorified, and I think that is why he said that to her.

Later, before he ascended into heaven and after He was glorified, He ATE with his disciples. He also had Thomas TOUCH his side and hands.

Personally I love to eat, and I can't help but believe Jesus ate with his disciples AFTER he was risen, to show that YES we will eat with glorified bodies...

Let me at it. That has to mean, NO WEIGHT GAIN! WOW!
Reply:He was in hell for three days.
Reply:He went to hell for our sins and took the keys to the gates of hell from satin. He now holds the key.
Reply:Man, I think I know this.

I vaguely remember learning in Catholic school that he descended into hell, and he brought back with him the "good" thief who was crucified with him, the one he told would be with him in paradise.

I thought he then did go to heaven then came back to Earth.

I'm pretty sure it's in the bible somewhere.
Reply:Jesus never died on the cross, he was ascended into heaven, because God does not allow any of his prophets getting harmed, and that's why Jesus (as) will come on day judgement.
