“Hello old friend.”





DQ was ready for breakfast and let me know with slobbery kisses to my face. I should make her sleep on the floor, but any extra warmth after the big chill is welcome even from a lovable mutt like DQ. I glanced at the clock and smiled. Some said that the survivors should throw out all the old ways and start a clean slate, but I liked the idea of keeping life sliced up into 24 neat sections called hours. As I tidied up my sleep cocoon I thought of how keeping time had kept me on track and gave my life order while many others had seemed to crawl off into the maw of ennui never to be seen or heard from again. Still, there had to be some still alive out there and maybe, just maybe, today’s search would find them.





I made myself one of my usual breakfasts of powdered eggs with bottled water, dried fruit, tinned crackers - what they used to call “John Wayne cookies” - and instant coffee while DQ happily munched on her kibble. The snow tractor was ready to go at a moment’s notice, so after breakfast we would set out. Someday I would cross the big lake and see what for now was a land too far, but there were still plenty of buildings to check right here.





Six hours was the maximum I could stay out in the tractor unless I found a working fuel station which was unlikely. I watched for one anyway as I scanned the lifeless buildings looking for any signs of heat. Then I saw it. A patch on a wall, very small, where the frost was gone. Heat leakage for sure! Leaving DQ with the tractor, I went inside.





There was a homemade cocoon in the corner made of blankets and sleeping bags. I could see a wisp of steam escaping from an air hole. Life! Slowly I started to turn the layers back.





He was a mess! Frostbite had left holes in his face and from what I could see he was close to starvation. Elation and then fear crossed his exposed face leaving what? Madness? I held out my hand.





“Touch me not! Touch me not!”, he screamed. “Love me or leave me, love me or leave me, love me or leave me and she left me! She left me!”





Rage made spittle fly from his cracked lips as he shrieked. It froze to the scraggly beard instantly. What could I do? I covered him and went back out to the tractor and got DQ. She couldn’t stay out in the cold long, but she could help if he got violent on the trip back to the tractor.





Once again I peeled apart the homemade cocoon. Terrorized eyes sought my face and then looked down at DQ. I poised ready to bonk him on the head if he went for her.





“Dog. Nice dog. Nice, nice, nice dog..”





What a sight we would have been for anyone watching as I walked out to the tractor almost carrying this poor half frozen creature and a dog dressed like she was going for a space walk. That’s okay. We would go back to my bunker and I’d nurse him back to health if it were possible. After all, any extra warmth in the big chill is welcome.

I know you won’t be expecting this letter but I just had to write in hopes that we can start again with A CLEAN SLATE. There are a lot of things I don’t like about you but I’m really trying hard to think differently and change my attitude.


You are not coming from A LAND TO FAR from me. Actually you are a bit to close at times because you have always given me THE BIG CHILL which is really hard to warm up to and you can blow up a storm for no reason or warning at all.


The one thing I can’t get over is your LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME mannerism. I mean what’s with the TOUCH ME NOT attitude. How is a person supposed to react to you with love?


Oh forget this. It’s not going to work because I know THE BIG CHILL coming from you again is just around the corner and when you arrive I’m leaving for warmer climes.


So I might as well say it now, “Good-bye winter.”
